Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Lagos State Command has promised to continue working with Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC) so as to reduce crime in the state.
The NPF were among the stakeholders that attended a one day seminar for stakeholders in Lagos Division tagged “Neighbourhood Safety as a Strategy for Effective Crime Control in Lagos State” held at the Molade Okoya Sport Complex, Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
While delivering a goodwill message, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Francis Ani who spoke on behalf of Area B Commander appreciated the kinds words said about NPF by LNSC officials. CSP said the Police in the state are happy working with LNSC promised that the Police will continue to work with the security outfit.
“We’re happy we’re working with you and I promise we’ll continue to work with you. “You’re still a baby. A child of two years is still a baby, we’ll continue to work with you till you mature “, the Police officer assured.
On his part, Chairman of the Lagos State Task Force, CSP Saheed Egbeyemi expressed his admiration for the work done by LNSC in the last two years despite not being armed.
“you guys are not armed, no teasers or tear gas, yet you’re performing wonderfully well”, he said. CSP Egbeyemi while commenting on the issue of state police argued that Lagos State is ready anytime it is approved.
According to him “the issue of state policing is coming gradually to be and whether we like it or not, Lagos State is ready “.
Delivering his Key Note address, Board Chairman, DIG Israel Ajao (rtd) disclosed that at inception, the major challenge faced by LNSC was that Lagosians misconstrued LNSC for the defunct Neighbourhood watch.
DIG however stated that the challenge has been surmounted and LNSC has since continued to carry out its primary responsibility which is to gather intelligence and give to NPF whom he said has the constitutional right to prosecute suspected criminals. The board Chairman who was represented by Chief Tunde Aboyade, Board Member representing Ikeja division lauded other security agencies in the state especially the NPF.
While Eulogising NPF for the support given to LNSC, Aboyade said “I have utmost regard for you for your unflinching support for us”. He said the programme was organized with the major aim of soliciting the support of stakeholders especially in the area of information gathering so as to make Lagos safer. Chief Aboyade further disclosed that the board is planning to work with education authorities in the state with a view to stem the tide of cultism among primary and secondary school pupils whoh he said was on a geometrical progression.
In his welcome address, Board Member representing Lagos Division, Mr Ishola Laguda appreciated the stakeholders for attending the programmes. Laguda counselled that LNSC cannot reduce crime rate alone except with the support of all Lagosians and other security agencies.
Guest lecturer Mr. Sola Opaleye who delivered a lecture titled “Positive and Productive Attitude to Work and Life” enjoined LNSC operatives to also be mindful of their attitudes adding that “attitude will either draw people closer to you or drive people away from you “. Opaleye also advised LNSC operatives to imbibe good self image which he said is the source of attitude.
In his words “As a security officer, people must be drawn to you, people must feel comfortable while with you. A bad attitude is like a flat tyre that will not take you anywhere unless you change it.
Commenting on the performance of LNSC, Chairman, Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), Itire Ikate Jamiu Akinwunmi gave kudos to the security outfit and advocated the use of arms by its operatives. The OPC chairman reasoned that it is not easy for security operatives to go after armed suspected criminals without arms and promised that the OPC will render it’s support to LNSC at anytime.
Speaking on behalf of market men and women in the division, Iyaloja General, Apapa Iganmu United, Alhaja Afusat Popoola solicited the support of LNSC in fighting crimes in market places. From the religious angle, Reverend Canon Johnson Olajana of the Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Ebute Ero described LNSC operatives at men of integrity.
Reverend Olajana further charged parents to always watch the movement of their children so as to prevent them from engaging in crime. The Onikate of Itire Ikate LCDA, Oba Lateef Atanda Adams urged LNSC operatives to always be in contact with traditional rulers in their various neighbourhoods and promised to continue to offer prayers towards the success of the security outfit.
In his Vote of Thanks, LNSA Executive Secretary, Barrister Gboyega Bajulaiye applauded the Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, the Board and LNSC operatives for a job well done. Barrister Bajulaiye advised LNSC operatives to be more courageous and wishes the stakeholders as safe journey back home.
Other law enforcement agencies present at the seminar included Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA). LNSA board members, Princess Kofoworola Adegboye (Ikorodu Division), Princess Ronke Ogabi (Badagry Division), Otunba Denge Anifowose, (Epe Division) and other top management staff of LNSA were also at the seminar.
